Standards Australia has releaseed interim standard for aquatic and waterborne inflatables. The Standard AS 3533.4.5(Int) - 2012 Amusement rides and devices, Part 4.5: Specific requirements - Waterborne inflatables, was developed in response to recommendations made by the Queensland Coroner following a drowning fatality.
Standards Australia Chief Executive Officer Colin Blair explains "this interim standard specifies safety requirements and test methods of constant airflow inflatable devices when used as amusement devices."
Blair added that the document was prepared to address the design and operation of waterborne inflatable equipment and facilities.
For the purposes of the standard, a waterborne inflatable is defined as an inflatable device used on controlled body of water.
The standard provides guidance on issues relating to: anchorage, structural integrity, open sides, access and egress, containment, water depth and entrapment.
The Interim Standard was prepared by Standards Australia Committee ME-051, Amusement Rides and Devices. The committee includes representatives from industry, consumer associations, government, regulators, child safety, and academia.
