With Children’s Wild Play Gardens already installed in Melbourne and Perth, a $1.5 million grant from the Ian Potter Foundation will now establish Sydney’s first Children’s Wild Play Garden in Centennial Park.

The largest ever philanthropic grant sourced by the Centennial Parklands Foundation, the Ian Potter Children’s Wild Play Garden will create a memorable experience that will benefit generations of children.

The Garden will be an interactive environment that allows children to experience the learning power of nature, through free nature-based play and unstructured learning.

This will be the first dedicated public children’s garden in NSW, and will teach children to respect and understand the natural world in a hands-on and engaging environment.

Welcoming the grant, Costa Georgiadis, passionate Parklands supporter and ABC Gardening Australia host, explained “Centennial Parklands’ vision to establish Sydney’s first Children’s Wild Play Garden is now a reality.

“With this generous donation by Lady Potter and her Foundation, this will be a safe, natural space for our children and future generations to explore, learn, be challenged and connect with nature right here in Sydney.

“This Garden will not be just another playground or picnic area. Like the similar facility in Melbourne’s Botanic Garden, it will be a purpose-built facility that will enable children to interact freely with the natural environment and to undertake managed risk-taking activities in a safe and controlled environment.”

“Children who come to this wild-play Garden will develop a sense of place, which will connect them to the Parklands environment and nature for life.”

Once established in late 2015, the Ian Potter Children’s Wild Play Garden will complement Centennial Parklands unique environmental education offerings, which see 15,000+ Bush School participants and over 40,000 children enjoy free nature-based play at the Parklands each year.
