$17.7 million for sports facilities across Western Australia

Grants totalling more than $17.7 million will go towards new swimming pools, recreation centres, playing fields and a host of other sporting and recreation projects across Western Australia.
28 projects will get the go-ahead after being awarded funding last week under the Western Australia Government's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
Commenting on the funding, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron stated "the Government believes improved sporting and recreational facilities encourage people to be more active.
"We also know that being involved in sport at a grass roots level not only brings the community together but it can foster teamwork and improve mental and physical health, as well as lower crime and truancy."
Offered annually, the CSRFF grants for projects costing more than $150,000 are designed to contribute to the construction or improvement of grassroots sporting and recreational facilities across the State.
Western Australia Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said he was pleased to announce that half of the funding for the CSRFF program was now provided by Royalties for Regions.
Minister Redman "this is a valuable grants program which allows recipients to undertake projects they might not otherwise be able to afford."
Projects that will benefit from the $17,768,503 worth of grants are:
• City of Cockburn: $2.4 million for new multi-purpose leisure and aquatic centre
• City of Gosnells: $2 million for playing surfaces, lighting and multi-purpose community building at Mills Park
• City of Joondalup: $1.2 million for synthetic hockey pitch and pavilion at Warwick Open Space
• City of Kwinana: $900,000 for upgrade of Kwinana Recquatic (pictured)
• Shire of Boddington: $610,000 for construction of a new indoor multipurpose recreation and community centre.
