read moreThe organising committee of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia has defended the price of tickets for the multi-sport event.
With tickets go on sale to the public at the end of this month, the cheapest admission for a sports session costs around $2, with the average price around $7. Tickets for the opening ceremony will cost between $52 and $139.
According to local media reports, Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said he was shocked at the prices and that the organising committee (INASGOC) should find a way to provide cheaper tickets.
Uno advised “perhaps by offering 20% discount for students and look for multiple sponsors that can give out discount or promo for the public.”
However, INASGOC Ticketing Director Sarman Simanjorang said the price was set based on discussions with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
Simanjorang also noted that the cost of the tickets was adjusted based on the popularity of the Asian Games.
Last month, the multi-sport event linked up with KiosTix as it looks to surpass 1.3 million ticket sales. With the help of KiosTix, which usually provides tickets for music concerts and exhibitions, Asian Games organisers are selling tickets for 40 sports, 67 disciplines and 463 events.
INASGOC President Erick Thohir stated last month “we are making the Asian Games accessible to everyone in Indonesia with the pricing policy, and this partnership with KiosTix will help the public buy tickets in advance.
“This is the first time this has happened in Indonesia for an international sports event.”
The event is being co-hosted by the cities of Jakarta and Palembang between 18th August and 2nd September.
