read moreThe Lyneham Beach Sports Facility has opened in the northern suburbs of Canberra, with ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation Shane Rattenbury saying that the multi-purpose facility will be a valuable addition to the area's growing sports precinct.
To be operated by Volleyball ACT, the $1 million facility will cater for a large number of sports and activities in addition to volleyball, including football, netball, rugby, touch football and group fitness boot camps.
It features six full-size beach volleyball courts across an area of 2700 metre² situated behind the Lyneham Netball Centre.
Jointly opened this week by ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Minister Rattenbury, with the latter stating “this facility provides another opportunity for Canberrans to get active outdoors, and try a different version of sports they know and love or having a go at something new.
“This facility will not only provide Canberrans with more opportunities to engage in sport and recreation activities but it will also serve as a useful alternative training facility for many sports.
Volleyball ACT Chief Executive Andrew Crozier said the Lyneham Beach Sports Facility is a welcome boost for the sport and will attract new players to the sport.
Crozier stated “this is great for volleyball in the ACT, as it gives us an opportunity to grow beach volleyball in the ACT. In addition, the facility gives other sports the chance to offer their members something different.
“I’m also looking forward to being able to attract major events and elite players to Canberra to enjoy this facility. We’ll be working closely with Volleyball Australia as well as other peak sporting organisations to ensure the new facility is used to its full potential.”
The facility will be used for the first time this weekend when the 50th Good Neighbour Volleyball Tournament is held. This year’s event has attracted over 1,000 players to Canberra and will for the first time in its history, includes a beach volleyball competition.
However, the project has been controversial with its initial $750,000 increasing to $1.063 million.
