read moreIn a move to speed up merchandise and food and beverage sales, the Adelaide Oval is looking to become a cashless venue.
With card transactions having risen to almost 90% of sales from just 13% in 2014, the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority (AOSMA) has this year converted a large number of outlets to only accept card payments.
Commenting on the move, AOSMA General Manager Darren Chandler said was all about faster service and followed a trial for card-only outlets during the 2016/17 cricket season.
Chandler told the ABC “the trial was well received, particularly by those seeking a faster speed of service and for the growing number of patrons who do not want to carry cash.
"Approximately two-thirds of our outlets are (now] card-only, which is slightly behind buying behaviour where card transactions sit at around 87%."
The system is being put to the test with a busy weekend of fixtures starting with Thursday's clash with the Adelaide Crows beating Greater Western Sydney, followed by Port Adelaide Power’s loss to the West Coast Eagles last night, while today Sturt will play Central District in the SANFL semi-finals and Woodville-West Torrens will play the Port Adelaide Magpies.
For those with cash, the venue offers a small number of booths where patrons can exchange cash for an Adelaide Oval Cash Card, which can be redeemed for F&B and other purchases.
Based on a CommBank technology solution all credit and debit cards are accepted with transaction fees absorbed by AOSMA. The Cards incur no fees and can be reimbursed in full at any time.
A Comm Bank case study on the move to a cashless stadium, explains that "Adelaide Oval installed 337 integrated fixed iPP350 EFTPOS terminals, which feature the latest contactless ‘tap and go’ technology; 25 integrated mobile iWL252 EFTPOS terminals in the corporate hospitality areas; and 14 standalone mobile iWL255 EFTPOS terminals in the marquees to process merchandise and food and beverage sales.”
Commenting on the overall move to cashless transactions, Chandler concluded “consumer behaviour is trending this way and it's all a part of our approach to keep up with consumer demands and provide a faster service for patrons."
