read moreAs part of the redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval, 8,500 seats are being offered to community sporting clubs in South Australia.
Rather than dump the 20 year old plastic seats when they are removed from the current stadium site, the South Australian Stadium Management Authority (SMA) is making up to 300 seats each available to local clubs.
SMA partners the SA National Football League and SA Cricket Association are contacting sporting clubs across South Australia to offer them the seats.
South Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Tom Kenyon said the Adelaide Oval project would have spin-offs beyond professional sports such as AFL and cricket that will combine at the new city ground.
Minister Kenyon stated "we're aiming to reuse or recycle material from the oval wherever we can - and these seats will be a lasting asset for many sports clubs and community groups."
Sports clubs have until the end of the month to register their claim on the Oval redevelopment website for the seats, on the Adelaide Oval redevelopment website.
The seats which will be available to the clubs through March and must be removed before the Oval becomes a work-site in April.
SMA Chief Executive Leigh Whicker added "here is a great opportunity for sporting clubs and community groups to get a direct benefit from Adelaide Oval by improving their own facilities for their members with these seats."
Adelaide Oval is to undergo a $450 million redevelopment into a 50,000-seat multi-sport venue by the start of the 2014 AFL season.
A full-time chief executive for the new venue is expected to be appointed in June.
