read moreWith recent research from Adelaide City Council showing that city’s green space attract nine million visits a year, officials at the Adelaide Park Lands are highlighting their importance in enhancing the daily lives of South Australians.
Enveloping the Adelaide CBD and the suburb of North Adelaide, the Adelaide PPark Lands covering some 930 hectares - almost three times the size of Central Park in New York - the Adelaide Park Lands are the largest urban park system in Australia.
And putting the nine million visits into context, they are equivalent to each person living in South Australia (population 1.67 million) visiting the Park Lands five times a year.
The Council, in partnership with South Australian Government and inner-metropolitan councils, is currently reviewing the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy, which has strengthened the diversity of the Park Land’s places and spaces.
The last strategy was completed in 2010, and in order to inform the new Strategy, a status report on what has been achieved over the past five years has been prepared.
During this period approximately $598 million has been invested specifically in the Top 10 Park Lands projects by the Adelaide City Council ($45 million), and the South Australian ($548 million) and Federal ($5 million) Governments.
The Park Lands also host more 600 events, from large music festivals to intimate weddings, and in 2012 more people attended events in the Park Lands than the combined attendance at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds and the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
Improvement projects have included high profile projects such as the new footbridge over the River Torrrens that link the city with the redeveloped Adelaide Oval and the recently completed makeover of Victoria whil smaller projects have included enhancements at the North Adelaide dog park.
Often referred to as ‘Adelaide’s largest shared back yard’, the Park Lands over places to play with upgraded play spaces and courts; places to grow with a new community garden and integrated verge gardens where people can grow and harvest their own produce, as well as places to escape, reflect and get active.
The Park Lands are also a place where children and families can be active, with the Council having recently launched a Nature Play campaign with the release of a free downloadable e-book 20 ways with Nature Play.
