The Rockhampton Region Sporting Destination guide showcases the vast number of major sporting complexes and venues across Rockhampton. The guide also profiles local caterers, physiotherapists, accommodation providers and group transfer companies aimed at bringing more major sporting events to the region.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the Rockhampton region is home to national, international and Olympic standard sporting facilities that nurture beginners through to professional athletes.
“With world class hockey fields, a FINA certified pool, outdoor velodrome, a 2000metre flat water rowing course, premier mountain bike trails, A-grade netball courts and football fields and our sub-tropical climate, Rockhampton is a suitable destination for all levels of sporting competitions and championships,” Mayor Williams said.
“Our city has played host to many major sporting events in the past, like the 2019 Oceania Cup, 2021 KTM AJMX Championships and of course the three 2021 NRL Premiership matches last year.
“Major sporting events like these are not only good for our economy, but they also bring our city to life and evoke a sense of pride amongst our community.
“Rockhampton’s Sporting Destination Guide builds on the great work that the Advance Rockhampton team have been doing behind the scenes in helping to build a liveable and visitable region”.
Advance Rockhampton’s Executive Manager Greg Bowden said Rockhampton’s Sporting Destination Guide aligns with Advance Rockhampton’s economic development strategy.
“We’re putting Rockhampton on the radar as a destination of choice amongst state and national sporting peak bodies, schools and sporting clubs”.
“Last year’s NRL games brought in a combined $1.9 million in economic expenditure, so we know that major sporting events and championships bring a boost to our economy and increase our visitor numbers.
“This new guide is not an Olympic guide, however today’s launch is timely as planning for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games ramp up.
“While the Olympics are hosted by our capital city, there are many ways Rockhampton can get involved over the next ten years, be that through attracting training camps, supply chain opportunities and of course the forecasted incremental visitation pre and post the Games across Queensland.
“This proves that promoting our world class sporting facilities to peak bodies across the country should continue to be an important focus for us over the coming years”.
