read moreRoyal Life Saving in the Northern Territory has announced that the Alice Springs Lifesaving Club is to get a state-of-the-art machine for learning Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and to help with competitions in lifesaving.
The Laerdal Resusci Anne Full Body CPR manikin, which simulates CPR on a person, has an electronic skill meter that details the depth of compressions, volume of air and rate of compressions.
Funding of the manikin was made possible by Ruth Morley Legal Services donated over half the amount of funds needed while the rest was raised through fundraising activities by the Pool Lifesaving Team.
Royal Life Saving Northern Territory Executive Director Floss Roberts sees that the Resusci Ann Full Body CPR manikin will be a vital addition to the Alice Springs Aquatic Centre.
Roberts explains “Royal Life Saving NT provides CPR and first-aid training to Central Australia (and) this will enhance people’s learning of these lifesaving skills.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Alice Springs Pool Lifesaving. We are so grateful for the Ruth Morley Legal Services donation and Ruth Morley herself, who has provided us with the motivation and drive to make this happen.
“We (know) that more people in Alice Springs need to have lifesaving skills. Alice Springs has the best aquatic centre in the Northern Territory (and) we are calling on more people in the Alice to join the Pool Lifesaving Club in Alice Springs.
“People can join Lifesaving NT and become part of our cause to promote water safety including invitations to lifesaving events, discounts on training courses, a monthly newsletter and more for just $10 per year for children.”
Ruth Morley, whose funding helped secure the manikin, stated “I think having the capacity to safely rescue somebody from the water is as important as knowing first aid.
“I was brought up with this as my father - Peter Gerald Morley - was a combined operation pilotage patrol officer with the British Navy in World War Two. His mother - Mary Elizabeth Cresswell - was a highly decorated surf lifesaver in the UK at the turn of the 20th Century so I grew up with an appreciation of and respect for the water.
“I was taught how to swim and handle river currents (and today) I am a regular lap swimmer at our fantastic aquatic centre.
“In Central Australia we have numerous suburban and now remote community swimming pools, dramatic river surges and deep cold water holes. I am so pleased that the Royal Life Saving Society has established itself in Central Australia. We must take great care around water.”
Alice Springs Aquatic and Leisure Centre spokesperson Petina Franklin added “the Alice Springs community participating in CPR training can use the new manikin to understand the implications of well delivered CPR in an emergency situation and have more confidence in their ability to perform basic life support.
“CPR is a national event in pool lifesaving. It’s a relatively new sport in Alice Springs. Now we have a manikin and it will give our competitors an equal chance with other teams. It will also encourage more interest in lifesaving as a sport.”
