Andrew Gaze confirmed as Sydney Kings Head Coach for 2018/19

Andrew Gaze confirmed as Sydney Kings Head Coach for 2018/19
February 27, 2018

Andrew Gaze will continue in the role of Sydney Kings Head Coach - his third season in charge - for the 2018/19 NBL season.

Gaze’s role  was announced today following a review undertaken by team owner AEG Ogden Chairman Harvey Lister, Sydney Kings Managing Director Jeff Van Groningen, and members of the AEG Ogden executive team.

Reviews of each segment of the Kings business occur at season’s end and include an assessment of the season as well as a presentation of plans by the relevant leaders of each business area.

A comprehensive review of the basketball department will now commence following Gaze’s reappointment.

This will include high performance, team personnel, coaching and support staff and service providers, and is expected to be completed over the next 10 days.

Lister said it had been a challenging season on court for the Kings, advising “some unfortunate, unavoidable injuries meant that the coach didn’t have a full complement of players at any point in the season to call upon, which made the task extremely difficult.

“As a club, the Kings are honoured to have Andrew on board during this process and we’re pleased he will continue the task of overseeing the Kings reaching their full potential.

“We always anticipated it would take three years to stabilise this club and find success and I believe that we are on track to do that.

“However, I have made it clear to the Managing Director and Head Coach heading into the 2018/19 season that anything other than reaching the playoffs will not be acceptable. I am very encouraged by the retention and recruitment plans that they have outlined and look forward to the season ahead.”

Van Groningen said the organisation was looking forward to the 2018/19 NBL season and taking that next step to playoff contention.

Van Groningen added “we commend Andrew for his efforts in what was a challenging season at times. The review process was an opportunity to assess his plan and vision for the coming season. We now press forward and continue to build this business with great anticipation.”

The Sydney Kings recorded double-figure wins in each of the last two seasons but missed the NBL playoffs and are singularly focused on the task of ensuring post-season action is seen once again by the club.

Six wins from their last seven games, the addition of 2016/17 NBL MVP Jerome Randle to join dual MVP winner and Rio Olympian Kevin Lisch in the backcourt, the strong late season form of current Boomer Jason Cadee, two-time Olympian Brad Newley and import forward Perry Ellis and the development of young big men Isaac Humphries and Dane Pineau reinvigorated the club and were factors that led many observers to believe the club is heading in the right direction.
