Applauding 25 Years for QPAC

Applauding 25 Years for QPAC
February 2, 2010

Queensland Premier and Arts Minster Anna Bligh has congratulated the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) on 25 years as the state's home for world-class performance.

Premier Bligh explained "this is a landmark anniversary for QPAC, Queensland's leader in presenting exceptional performing arts from our own backyard and around the world.

"Since the curtain went up on the first public performance in the Lyric Theatre in 1985 on 7th February for a production of The Pirates of Penzance, more than 13 million people have seen a show at QPAC.

"It has an established track record as a producer of new work, is home to the state's leading arts companies and a sought-after venue on the international scene hosting exclusive performances by the world's most acclaimed companies such as last year's visit by the Paris Opera Ballet.

"QPAC continues to defy global trends with its anniversary year starting with record sales. More than 60,000 people attended events in January, with two sell-out shows, Angelina's Star Performance by the English National Ballet and Ballet Theatre of Queensland's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

The Premier said the Queensland Government's investment in the Cultural Centre continued to reap dividends with more than 3.8 million visits made in the 2008-2009 financial year to QPAC, Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, State Library of Queensland and Queensland Museum.

Premier Bligh also commented "last year QPAC underwent a major $34 million Government funded refurbishment (and) new seating, additional wheelchair locations, new stages, upgraded lighting, design and acoustics have greatly enhanced the QPAC experience for patrons and hirers and made it arguably the best performing arts venue for disability access in the country."

QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas announced the launch of Act 1, the anniversary program for the first half of 2010, which includes the Out of the Box festival, Ute Lemper, The Beach Boys and Nigel Kennedy.
