Queensland Arts Minister Ian Walker has welcomed Chris Saines in commencing in the role of Director of the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).

Minister Walker explained "Saines is very highly regarded, having worked in galleries in Australia and New Zealand and it's a real boon for the state to have such an experienced and committed professional in this position.

"Mr Saines has more than 30 years' experience as a director, curatorial and collection manager, educator and curator.

"He returns to Brisbane after 17 years as the Director of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, where he led an award-winning $125 million redevelopment of the gallery, secured the gift of a $115 million contemporary art collection and established a number of highly regarded recurring exhibitions.

"This is an exciting time at QAGOMA and I am delighted to welcome Mr Saines to this important role at one of Queensland's most loved and dynamic arts institutions."

Saines is no stranger to QAG, having worked at the gallery from 1984 to 1995 in curatorial and management roles.

Minister Walker said the appointment helped cement Queensland's growing reputation as an arts and cultural hub in the Asia Pacific region, concluding "I am confident he will continue his exemplary record of leadership and innovation. I look forward to working with Chris and his QAGOMA team as we deliver arts to all Queenslanders."

QAGOMA has a full program in place including the first Australian solo exhibition from leading international contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang: Falling Back to Earth' at GOMA from 23rd November, 2013 and two significant international exhibitions at QAG this year - Quilts 17001945 from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (15th Juneto 22nd September) and California Design 19301965: Living in a Modern Way (2nd November 2013 to 9th February 2014).
