Aquatic Risk Services launches safer surf parks program

Aquatic Risk Services launches safer surf parks program
March 20, 2025

With surf parks and artificial wave pools continuing to gain momentum globally, Aquatic Risk Services has launched the Safer Surf Parks Program to help meet the growing demand for highly skilled aquatic safety professionals.

The move follows the Melbourne-based company having last year launched aquatic safety training programs aimed at high-risk leisure and amusement offerings within amusement parks, surf parks, inflatable and cable ski parks.

A key highlight of their initiative was the introduction of the Inland Open Water Lifeguard Course, offering a specialised approach to water safety beyond the traditional pool environments.

By providing bespoke training programs, Aquatic Risk Services has empowered operators to ensure the highest levels of safety and preparedness, enhancing staff skills, strengthening consumer trust and regulatory confidence in these high-risk environments.

Commenting on the industry’s reaction, Aquatic Risk Services Principal, Ash Presser (pictured) advises “the response has been overwhelming, with many operators taking advantage of industry-specific training that offers purposeful learning outcomes and a stronger focus on safety and environmental considerations suited to the type of leisure offering.”

Now, after years of research and deep industry engagement, Aquatic Risk Services is offering its safety expertise internationally with the launch of the Safer Surf Parks Program - groundbreaking initiative designed not only for existing operational surf parks but also for developers looking to integrate best-in-class risk management strategies from the outset.

Emphasising the crucial role of proactive risk management in the industry's long-term success, Presser, a recognised leader in aquatic risk and safety, noted “risk doesn’t wait for opening day.

“The most effective risk and safety strategies begin well before development, saving operators significant financial and operational pain in the future.

“More importantly, failing to address risk exposures early can undermine public confidence and create regulatory pressures that restrict both business and industry growth.”

By aligning with the Safer Surf Park Program, facilities benefit from direct access to certified safety professionals who have had hands-on experience in operationalising surf parks and implementing evidence-based solutions backed by research.

The program eliminates uncertainty by providing structured risk and safety strategies, supported by comprehensive audits and expert oversight. For operators, it goes beyond compliance - it ensures they are equipped to proactively manage risks while reinforcing a genuine commitment to safety. Presser, who developed the program, added “this is not just a stated value but a demonstrated, measurable effort that builds consumer trust, enhances confidence, and sets a new benchmark for industry excellence.

“In an industry where both the operator and consumer confidence is paramount, an accredited risk and safety management system can heavily influence an operators success. The Safer Surf Park Program serves as a powerful differentiator by promoting due diligence, reinforce trust, building a generative safety culture and setting a new standard for excellence across the industry.

“With the global surf park industry expanding at an unprecedented rate, regulatory expectations are slowly evolving, and investor scrutiny on safety frameworks is intensifying. The Safer Surf Parks Program is not just an operational tool - it is a strategic advantage for developers, investors, and operators alike, ensuring that safety and risk management are embedded from the ground up so people can thrive beyond risk."

As the surf park industry continues to grow, initiatives like these are helping to shape its future by protecting businesses, employees, and guests while fostering a culture of excellence.

Presser shares his perspectives on surf parks and high-risk leisure in a feature in the latest issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
