read moreWith a mission to pay public performance royalties to musicians more accurately, licencing agency OneMusic is investing in the widespread rollout across Australian and New Zealand businesses of audio meter technology which recognises music as it is played in real-time.
OneMusic advises “Audoo audio meters will better identify the songs being played in public at a micro level - all day and all night - with macro effect.
“If our technology is adopted by all Australian and New Zealand licenced premises, it will log over 15.3 million plays ‘every. single. Day’ (and) we’ll know - with certainty and in detail - exactly what music everyone’s enjoying, for the very first time in public performance history.”
With installations having commenced last year, installation involves a technician coming in to premises and installing the audio meter into a power point. The audio meter device then recognises what music is playing after just 10 seconds and will securely fingerprint it, with no audio ever being stored on (or sent from) the device.
The songs being played are relayed back to Audoo as data (not audio) and each month will be reported to APRA AMCOS (one of the partners behind OneMusic) to ingest the data into their systems.
Catherine Giuliano, Director of OneMusic Australia encourages businesses to put their hand up for the meter to be installed in their space, explaining “for all the times you have wondered if your fees are going to the makers of the exact songs you play in your business, this is the chance to drive that change.”
A licence OneMusic Australia provides permission for fitness and wellbeing businesses and instructors to play the vast majority of the music heard on radio, TV, music-streaming services as well as music that is bought online or bought from a retailer.
Deadlifts & Death Metal
Music licence holder Elissa Jewell, the owner of Deadlifts and Death Metal in the Melbourne suburb of Preston, has carved out a profitable niche in a crowded suburban fitness market and building a loyal fraternity of music-lovers from her clients.
Jewell advises “we combine advanced strength coaching with blast beats, riffs and the love of extreme music.
“We offer metal themed classes, small group PT and coaching for people who love to listen as hard as they lift! If metal didn't feature as part of my business model, I'd be like every other fitness business, and that's the last thing I'd ever want.
“The right music can uplift you, help you focus and be a source of bonding. We not only talk about music during sessions, but we go out to gigs together, share new and upcoming bands and albums, and generally have a shared connection over the love of heavy metal.
“Bringing a niche community together to share what they love only strengthens their commitment to fitness and music, and we love to see it”!
With an Audoo Audio Meter installed at Deadlifts and Death Metal, Jewell explains “any role I can play in helping to advance the local metal scene and pay royalties to those who are upcoming is a huge bonus to me.”
OneMusic Australia, an AUSactive partner, is a joint initiative between music rights organisations APRA AMCOS and PPCA in Australia, collecting public performance licence fees (royalties), these royalties are then distributed by APRA AMCOS and PPCA.
APRA AMCOS looks after public performance royalties to songwriters and music publishers.
PPCA looks after public performance royalties to sound recording rights holders e.g. record labels and recording artists.
