read moreThe Australian Institute of Sport and Commonwealth Games Australia have teamed up to provide an extra $2 million in funding to back athlete preparation for the 2018 Gold Coast Games.
The funding boost was revealed earlier this month at Griffith University as the Australian Commonwealth Games Association launched its new logo, the ‘Commonwealth Games Australia’ brand and its 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Australian Team campaign.
The launch saw Australian Team Chef de Mission Steve Moneghetti and Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) President Sam Coffa joined by high performance personnel from all 18 Commonwealth Games program sports, athletes, sponsors and representatives from Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC).
Moneghetti said the launch was a major milestone in the journey to Gold Coast 2018, stating “for each and every Commonwealth Games we prepare as best we can, but there is no shying away from the added importance of the games being held on home soil.
“We are proud of our record at competing at Commonwealth Games, and we are equally proud of our record at hosting memorable games as we have done in 2006, 1982, 1962 and 1938.
“I have full confidence Gold Coast 2018 will be a great and memorable Commonwealth Games and I congratulate GOLDOC for the progress that has been made so far.”
ACGA Chief Executive Craig Phillips said that with a home Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast on the horizon, the time was right to freshen up the look of Commonwealth Games Australia.
Phillips added “Commonwealth Games Australia is about athletes representing and inspiring their country and achieving their sporting dreams, so it was important that athletes were a key part of the process in this new look coming together.
“We are proud that Commonwealth Games athletes, past and present, have been the driving force behind our new look and we really believe it is something they will be proud to wear and represent.”
ACGA has also recently welcomed the announcement that for the first time in history at a multi-sport games, there would be an equal number of medals available for men and women.
The addition of seven women’s events and categories across weightlifting, boxing and cycling to the program for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, means for the first time there will be 50/50 parity in medals to be won by men and women, a first in Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games history.
