Australia’s first high performance eSports venue opens at the SCG

Australia’s first high performance eSports venue opens at the SCG
November 20, 2017

Australia's first eSports High Performance Centre has been launched at the Sydney Cricket Ground, providing a new home for League of Legends Oceania champions the LG Dire Wolves and female development team Supa-Stellar.

The men's and mixed gender eSports outfits will be embedded alongside to the SCG Trust’s traditional sports partners the Sydney Swans, Sydney Sixers, Sydney Roosters, Sydney FC, Cricket NSW, Rugby Australia, AFL NSW, NRL and the NSW Waratahs.

The facility has been established to foster a new age of eSports players, driving growth and development from the grassroots level to the professional stage.

The new High Performance Centre has access to the latest technology and sport science including eye tracking technology and performance analysis thanks to a revolutionary partnership with the University of Technology, Sydney.

Welcoming eSports to the Moore Park precinct, Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust Chief Executive Jamie Barkley stated “(this) will be a game changer to have Australia’s leading eSports professionals in a dedicated high performance centre in the same precinct as the best athletes and officials from the SCG and Allianz Stadium’s traditional sports.

"Our venues are rapidly expanding their technology offerings and partnering with professional Esports entities and establishing the state of the art training centre presents an exciting opportunity."

LG Dire Wolves owner, David Harris believes the move to the SCG precinct will take the team’s game to the next level.

Harris added “(this) is an important step towards closing the gap with some of the top regions and becoming globally competitive in the eSports space.

"Our partnership with other organisations in the precinct including the UTS sport science faculty will help develop young talent both inside and outside of the game.”

The high performance centre will also provide a training base for visiting domestic and international teams as well as being a proving ground for budding professional gamers.

The LG Dire Wolves are Oceania’s leading League of Legends team and earlier this year became the first Australian side to compete at the world championships, which attracted a global viewing audience of hundreds of millions with the final played in front of a sell-out crowd in Beijing’s 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium.
