Australia’s first indoor surfing venue opens in Perth

Australia’s first indoor surfing venue opens in Perth
January 31, 2018

The Aloha Surfhouse, Australia’s first indoor surfing venue, has opened in the Perth suburb of Joondalup.

Developed at a cost of $6 million over a two year period, the business opened to the public on Monday, taking bookings for its Clip ‘n Climb indoor rock climbing with its artificial wave machine opening today.

In an Australian-first, the attraction uses American Wave Machines Surfstream technology, providing a standing wave setting right through to a two metre barrel. Surf sessions are available in 30 minute time-slots, along with options for group and party bookings.

Director Adam Blackwood explains “our waves are suitable for beginners right through to experienced surfers. We’re stoked to be able to offer a venue where people can surf, hang out and have fun with their friends.”

The pool, which holds 500,000 litres of water being recycled 24 hours a day, also features a $260,000 air filtering system that pushes out the chlorine and brings in fresh air so there is no chlorine smell.

At the moment, the pool is able to run its training and river waves, which can cater for beginners through to advanced body boarders and surfers, and its party wave for up to 12 riders.

The barrel wave is not yet available.

In addition to indoor surfing, the 1,600 metre²  venue offers a coffee house, retail boutique and yoga space while its Clip ‘n Climb facility operates with auto belay technology.

It will also offer an early morning yoga studio and plans to host Australia-wide surf competitions.

Preparatory works on the Aloha Surfhouse wave pool were undertaken by Commercial Aquatics Australia prior to the American Wave Machines installation.
