BCEC changes the agenda for a good cause

BCEC changes the agenda for a good cause
May 13, 2014

Cycle safety, solar power and children at risk took precedence for four weeks during March and April when the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) celebrated 1EARTH Month by shining the spotlight on the environment and the community.

For the second year in succession BCEC participated in the AEG 1EARTH Month global partnership that has become an annual event across the group’s worldwide family of venues.

The AEG 1EARTH program represents AEG’s commitment to prioritise environmental performance and community engagement of the AEG operations worldwide.

The month long program of activities started with the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour when BCEC was one of 56 AEG facilities and venues in 35 cities around the globe who extinguished all non-essential external and internal lighting for one hour at 8.30pm on Saturday 29th March.

The four week program involved staff, suppliers and clients and incorporated a number of projects and volunteering opportunities supported by a strong communication and education program to engage stakeholders.

BCEC staff embarked on a frenzy of activities including 14 hour working bee at Bravehearts, Australia’s leading child protection organisation and collecting art supplies to be used for children’s therapy sessions.

An Energy Workshop which helped staff understand how to reduce energy consumption both at home and work and explored the advantages of solar power, the formation of BCEC BUG – a 14 member Bicycle Users Group which included the building of a brand new bicycle parking area and facilities for staff and focussed on bicycle skill and safety and the donation of tea, coffee, sugar and cups for 300 volunteers working with Micah Projects 500 Lives 500 Homes campaign to end homelessness in Brisbane, were all part of a busy agenda.

BCEC General Manager Bob O’Keeffe, a member of the Centre’s Social Responsibility Task Force, said the success of this year’s 1EARTH program was a reflection of the passion and commitment of the Centre’s staff.

O’Keeffe explained “it reinforces the importance and value of putting our fundamental values into action.

“The Centre will continue to develop its Social Responsibility program, identifying future events and opportunities, ensuring momentum is maintained and furthering our commitment to achieve improved sustainability and greater engagement with our community.”

BCEC has EarthCheck Silver Certification under the globally recognised EarthCheck Program.
