The Resort Management Board has appointed Belgravia Leisure to manage the resort on a fee for service basis for a one year term with an option to extend this arrangement.
Belgravia Leisure General Manager of Operations Anthony McIntosh believes that the company is perfectly placed to improve the resort for visitors, stakeholders and the local community, stating “Mount Baw Baw is a wonderful tourism destination with fantastic natural assets and year round activities. We are very excited to be appointed and are keen to get started.
“Every year, we have in excess of 30 million people visits to Belgravia Leisure managed facilities across Australia and currently we manage over 80 diverse operations. We look forward to applying this knowledge and experience to Mount Baw Baw.”
The closest ski resort to Melbourne, the Mount Baw Baw ski resort offers about 30 hectares of mainly beginner-intermediate ski runs with seven lifts servicing a variety of runs. The resort village is at the bottom of the lifts, offering ski in-ski out access.
In addition to the downhill runs there are a number of cross country trails offering access to other parts of the Baw Baw plateau. Like most lower-lying Australian ski resorts, snow cover varies greatly from year to year, but is regularly available for the local ski season from about July to the end of September.
Explaining Belgravia Leisure’s move into a new sector, McIntosh states “one of the advantages of engaging Belgravia Leisure is our network. We have over 120,000 members at our facilities, and we work with over 300 schools, over 40 local governments, and have over 4000 staff servicing these facilities. By promoting Mount Baw Baw across our network we will be able to drive strong visitor growth for the Resort.
“We will be making improvements to visitor services, to accommodation, and to snow management which will enhance and expand the visitor experience.”
McIntosh said improving the commercial side of the operation was a key component of Belgravia Leisure’s plan, stating “it has been acknowledged that the Resort has to be financially sustainable in order to reduce the burden on the taxpayer. We will be looking for ways to increase revenue and operate more efficiently.
“We will look for opportunities for Belgravia Leisure to invest in the Resort and look to develop partnerships with other investors through our network.”
Belgravia Leisure has begun meeting with staff at the Resort to discuss their plans and begin a consultative process around future employment.
McIntosh concludes “we have over 4,000 staff at Belgravia Leisure, and we’re excited to secure passionate, committed and high quality individuals to work at Mount Baw Baw.” Mr McIntosh said.
