read moreWith temperatures in Western Sydney reaching a scorching 40 degrees over recent days, Wednesday saw more than 6,000 people visit Blacktown City Council’s Aquatic and Recreation Centres - Blacktown, Emerton, Mount Druitt, Riverstone and Stanhope.
Blacktown City Mayor Stephen Bali commented “on the extra hot days in summer our Leisure and Aquatic Centres are even more popular, as people seek to cool down.
“Some choose to swim a few laps, others look for a more leisurely swim, while the kids have endless hours of fun in the shaded toddler pools.
“The Leisure and Aquatic Centres continue to be at the heart of Blacktown City, providing a safe and friendly place for the community to enjoy the latest in an exciting range of health, aquatic, leisure and recreation programs and services.”
Blacktown’s seasonal pools, Riverstone Swimming Centre and Mount Druitt Swimming Centre, saw an influx of people on Wednesday, with 645 and 658 patrons respectively cooling off at these facilities.
The Council’s year-round facilities were also a popular place to be with 1,430 people enjoying all that Emerton Leisure Centre has to offer.
Blacktown Aquatic Centre saw 1,798 people through the door, with many families making a day of it at the Centre by bringing their picnic blankets and packed lunches to enjoy on the grassed areas at the award-winning facility.
Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope was also a hive of activity – with 1,820 visitors, many of who cooled off in the indoor wave pool.
Mayor Bali said Council’s aquatic and recreation centres are a great option for keeping cool on a hot day, with each of the venues offering a variety of facilities for families to enjoy.
He added “with the temperature set to hit around 40 degrees tomorrow (Friday 13th January) it’s important to follow NSW Health guidelines during extreme heat.
“Drink plenty of water, stay cool where possible and take care of each other during extreme heat.”
