Bondi Beach awarded for Environmental Sustainability

Waverley Council's stormwater harvesting scheme at Sydney's Bondi Beach has been recognised with the Environmental Sustainability award presented at the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Clean Beaches Awards 2015.
Introduced in 2012, the scheme harvests and re-uses stormwater previously discharged into the ocean at the southern end of the Beach.
Commenting on the scheme, Australian Clean Beaches judge Averil Bones stated "Waverley Council's investment in water conservation, particularly its scale and success is very impressive.
"This innovative scheme was built to treat over 50 million litres of stormwater per year, delivering recycled water for irrigation, toilets and public cleaning at Bondi Beach."
The Overall Australian Clean Beaches win went to Guilderton Western Australia, with Burleigh Beach in Queensland coming in at a close second.
Bondi Beach won the Keep New South Wales Beautiful Blue Stars Clean Beaches state title in December 2014, riding ahead of 18 other finalists. It was this win that put them forward to compete for the National title for 2015 - presented in Darwin last week.
Through the Clean Beaches Awards Program, Keep Australia Beautiful share expert knowledge and experience to empower those who care about beaches and waterways to actively work towards a cleaner, more sustainable marine environment.
