Australia will play Japan in the second-round tie after defeating Chinese Taipei recently in the first-round tie in Melbourne.
As one of the most successful Davis Cup nations, Australia has won the coveted title 28 times and finished runner-up on 19 other occasions. The winning team of the second-round tie will go on to compete in the World Group Play-offs later in the year.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said Brisbane City Council, through Brisbane Marketingâs Major Events program, was delighted to partner with Queensland Events Corporation and Tennis Queensland in staging this event.
Lord Mayor Newman stated "I'm thrilled Brisbane will host the Davis Cup in May.
"Hosting the Davis Cup will enhance Brisbaneâs reputation as a major tennis event destination and is expected to generate several million dollars in direct event expenditure and visitation for the city with an anticipated spectator audience of 12,000 over the three day event."
The Davis Cup follows the successful staging of the second annual Brisbane International and complements Brisbaneâs 2010 major events calendar including the upcoming Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series â Qantas Wallabies v Ireland and the Bundaberg Rum Tri Nations Series â Qantas Wallabies v Springboks in June and July respectively, Valentino, Retrospective: Past/Present/Future exhibition in August at the Gallery of Modern Art and the commencement of Australiaâs International Summer of Cricket with the 3 mobile Ashes Series - Australia v England in November.
With more than 100 years of tradition behind it, Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the premier team competition in tennis, as well as being the largest annual international team competition in sport.
The last Davis Cup to be held in Brisbane was in 2000 at ANZ Stadium where Australia defeated Brazil 5-0.
