As Belgravia Leisure’s Ambassador and Community Liaison Officer, Hanson held a one-on-one coaching session at Brisbane’s Albany Creek Leisure Centre to kick off the new initiative, designed to promote safe practices among swimmers lacking in skills and confidence.
The coaching lesson was won by five year-old Sophie MacLean, as part of an international swimming and water safety membership promotion.
The ‘non-swimmer’ campaign will see posters, brochures and multi-lingual counter cards rolled out at Belgravia Leisure’s 61 aquatic centres, encouraging patrons to be aware of their own swimming ability, swim within safe depths and voluntarily identify themselves to staff for closer supervision.
The new initiative is in line with Belgravia Leisure’s swimming and water safety programs, taught by AUSTSWIM™ accredited teachers and available to Australians of all ages, including new migrants and people with a disability.
The ‘non-swimmer’ campaign coincides with Belgravia Leisure’s installation of new defibrillation units at all centres to ensure communities are kept safe.
Introducing the campaign, Hanson explained "as the weather warms up, it’s vital that all Australians - including adults - are aware of their abilities in the water and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
“As a mother of three, and having personally experienced the dangers of water, I’m proud to be a part of Belgravia Leisure’s campaign to ensure all swimmers have a positive experience at aquatic centres over summer.”
Belgravia Leisure Chief Executive Nick Cox added “the wellbeing of our patrons is paramount and we’re thrilled to have the support of Brooke Hanson to ensure swimmers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy our facilities.
“In line with our established safety offerings, the new ‘non-swimmer’ campaign will enable us to increase public awareness and provide a safe and happy environment for all communities.”
