The upgrades are part of the Tasmanian Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, with Flinders Island visitors set to benefit.
Tasmanian Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan noted “The Flinders Island Camping Upgrades and Recreational Vehicle Access project includes improvements to key campground facilities and day use areas, improved road access for vehicle-based camping and upgraded walking tracks.
“Flinders Island has some of the most pristine landscapes and photogenic scenery in Tasmania. Providing access to these areas for visitors is very important for driving the regional tourism economy on the island.
“I am pleased to announce that Flinders Island firm 2 Rhodes Transport and Earthmoving has been awarded the contract following an open procurement process, supporting the local economy and jobs in the region.”
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service has consulted with Flinders Island Council, Flinders Island Business Inc and the local community over a number of years to identify areas on the island to promote for visitors.
Following this consultation, three sites will be revitalised in this stage of works:
Works will commence in March and are expected to take three months to complete, subject to weather conditions.
Future works proposed at North East River campground will align with the new Master Plan being developed by Flinders Island Council and supported by $150,000 of Tasmanian Government funding.
