The future of the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery looks secure with the facility operating again on a volunteer basis.

The Gallery closed its doors in April after council rejected a plea for $36,000 in emergency funding.

In a report before Cessnock City Council, the gallery's management committee says the organisation has undergone a thorough review.

The Gallery which operates from Thursday through to Sunday, is now completely run by volunteers.

A current exhibition of more than 40 donated art works will be auctioned at a major fundraising event later this month, while a gallery shop has also opened, featuring works by local artists.

Art classes are being held while partnerships have been established with a number of local businesses.

The report says the Gallery's finances have stabilised, its operational costs have been reduced to essential requirements, and the management committee is seeking additional grant funding.
