Christchurch leisure pool closes for post earthquake repairs

Christchurch leisure pool closes for post earthquake repairs
December 31, 2015

The leisure pool at Christchurch’s Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre will be closed from Monday 4th to Friday 29th January for earthquake repairs.

The urgent repairs to the leisure pool will include replacement of damaged and displaced ceramic pool tiles and expansion joints, plus other remedial work that can be done during this period.

Commenting on the closure, Christchurch City Council's Recreation and Sports Unit Manager John Filsell stated “due to the effects of the earthquakes, a number of ceramic tiles are coming loose from the leisure pool tank below the waterline.

"We've previously tried to fix the problem with temporary repairs, but these haven't been successful and we still have tiles coming loose, which is a health and safety issue for swimmers that needs to be addressed immediately.

“We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience, but encourage people to make use of the Council's outdoor pools, which only come into action in the summer and really boost the options for those who want to take a dip.”

During the closure, the facility's lap and learn-to-swim (teach) pools will remain open for swimmers, with lane swimmers ble to continue using the five-lane, 25-metre pool. During the closure, the teach pool to be made available for casual leisure use by the public. However, its spa, sauna and steam room will also be closed from 4th to 29th January for repairs and refurbishments.

Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre’s learn-to-swim programme will not be affected by the closure, with classes set to resume on Monday 1st February.
