Randwick City Council said it was declaring the alcohol ban "for the entire summer period at all beachside parks around Coogee Beach" effective from tomorrow (Thursday 29th December).
In a statement the Council explained “the ban is in response to the disgraceful events ... on Christmas Day where 15 tonnes of garbage were left strewn across the beach and there were a spate of alcohol-induced incidents from backpacker revellers.”
Incidents at the popular beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs are regularly blamed on European and Asian backpackers.
Randwick Mayor Noel D'Souza stated "the public outrage to the devastation of the parks and beach itself on Christmas Day has been quite phenomenal”, referring to the "poor and inappropriate behaviour of a few on Christmas Day".
Mayor D'Souza added “we need to reassure the community that they can feel safe when visiting and enjoying the jewel in the crown of Randwick City, Coogee Beach.
"Only a few weeks ago, Council took affirmative action to restrict alcohol in both Dunningham and Goldstein Reserves from 12pm to 4pm each day to reduce the number of alcohol-related incidents.”
