City of Ballarat funds Hockey facility redevelopment at Prince of Wales Park

City of Ballarat funds Hockey facility redevelopment at Prince of Wales Park
January 16, 2024

The City of Ballarat is funding $1.3 million towards improving the experience and provision of facilities for hockey across the region at the Prince of Wales Park.

The project will see the replacement of the synthetic 'hockey turf,' upgraded ball protection fencing, new player shelters and improved infrastructure for players.

A feasibility study, jointly funded by the City of Ballarat and Sport and Recreation Victoria, which was completed in 2022 highlighted the increasing demand for enhanced hockey infrastructure in Ballarat. This project is the first stage in developing improved facilities to cater for the future growth of hockey in Ballarat and the surrounding region.

Current works are expected to be completed by end of May.

Project highlights include:

  • Replacement of existing synthetic ‘hockey turf’ including sub-base gravel replacement, assessment of shock-pad and placement of asphalt seal waterproofing layer
  • Installation of rubber matting protection behind each goal
  • Installation of two new player interchange shelters
  • Installation of a new technical bench
  • New pitch access gates and modification of the eastern pitch fencing to suit location of new player and match official shelters
  • Relocation of existing scoreboard.

City of Ballarat Deputy Mayor, Peter Eddy expressed the urgency of the project and shared “This initiative is crucial to unlocking the potential for hockey in Ballarat.

“The current facility limitations hinder the sport's progress, and this redevelopment is a step towards creating first class facilities for our community.

“We understand the challenges with an upgrade of this kind and the aim is to minimise disruptions as much as possible. I want to thank Hockey Ballarat for their support and patience.

"The City of Ballarat’s $1,300,000 funding of this project is another example of our commitment to delivering a better Ballarat and our dedication to fostering community sports.”
