City of Casey backs football facilities for Team 11 consortium

City of Casey backs football facilities for Team 11 consortium
May 14, 2018

The Team 11 consortium bidding for an A-League licence in Melbourne’s south east has secured $23 million in funding for a state-of-the-art headquarters and training facility.

The City of Casey has committed the funds for the Casey Fields Regional Football Centre, which they say will be an ‘elite facility’ consisting of training grounds, artificial and natural turf pitches and a headquarters for the planned A-League expansion team.

The funds, reliant on the Council's application for funding from the Victorian Government's infrastructure fund. If successful, would see the the centre operational by November 2019.

Construction will be separated into two stages to accommodate the possibility that Team 11 may not be chosen by FFA as one of two new A-League clubs in October this year.

The first stage is a community facility, the second stage is specifically suited to the potential A-League club.

City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett, said the development was a response to football's growing popularity in the region, commenting “this elite standard facility is for the entire regions soccer community, to shared by community clubs and schools, providing our kids with the best possible opportunity to become the next Socceroo and Matilda.

“Football is booming in the south-east and we are struggling to cater for the demand.

“The only thing missing is an elite facility and an elite club to represent them and provide a tangible pathway to the highest ranks of the game.

“To house an A-League and W-League club here will also further establish Casey Fields as the home of sport in the south-east of Victoria.”
