City of Fremantle and Perth-based Yogazeit help teenagers and young adults support mental health and wellbeing

City of Fremantle and Perth-based Yogazeit help teenagers and young adults support mental health and wellbeing
January 6, 2021

Perth-based not-for-profit body Yogazeit has announced the launch of Mindful Yoga for Youth, a new yoga program for teenagers and young adults, funded by City of Fremantle and supported by PCYC Fremantle.

With a focus on mental health and physical wellbeing, classes are weekly run by a qualified yoga educator with participants able to log on via Zoom or attend the class in person.

The 60 minute class is suitable for ages 13 and above and offers a new way for young people to learn to live a happy, healthy life. Classes incorporate mindfulness and relaxation techniques that will support participants with skills for life.

Aware that young people in Australia experience very high stress in schools and life, which can have negative impacts on their mental health, social and academic skills, Regina Cruickshank, founder and Executive Director of Yogazeit Ltd, explains “rather than putting on a patch and treating children and adolescents for mental health illnesses when its there, our yoga and mindfulness programs teach kids essential skills from the inside out.

“Through yoga and mindfulness we get an opportunity to learn to become more self-aware which will help us self-regulate. It's real yoga time - being present for when we need it most.”

Mindful Yoga for Youth is available in four weekly blocks throughout the first half of 2021, each class lasting 60 minutes and covering breathing exercises to help with stress and anxiety at school or at home; mindfulness practices to aid staying focused and calm; gentle mindful movement (yoga) to enhance physical fitness, flexibility and strength (suitable for complete beginners) and relaxation as a platform for self-care and to destress.

Mindful Yoga for Youth classes will be held on Wednesdays throughout Term 1 and 2 2021 with the first block starting in February at PCYC Fremantle.

Other months are also available to book. All classes are funded by City of Fremantle and kindly supported by PCYC Fremantle.
