read moreWith this week being National Volunteer Week (17th-23rd May) and with a 2021 theme of ‘Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine’, City of Stonnington Mayor Kate Hely, is encouraging people to seek opportunities to give back to their community through volunteer work.
National Volunteer Week is a chance to celebrate the significant contribution of the close to six million people who volunteer in Australia.
Mayor Hely notes “volunteering is an incredible way to support your community, and also build skills, networks and friendships.
“Across Stonnington we have wonderful community organisations who need help as our community emerges from a tough time in 2020.
“It isn’t just about giving back to the community, from my volunteering experience with the Stonnington Toy Library and Brookville Kindergarten I’ve developed new skills, gained new friends and felt really good about our community at the same time.
“In the lead-up and during National Volunteer Week I’ll be visiting Stonnington Toy Library, Uniting Prahran, Save A Dog Scheme in Malvern, Prahran Assumption Football Club, Brookville Kindergarten, the Men of Malvern health and welfare group, Chabad House Malvern and the Malvern branch of the State Emergency Services. And I’m really looking forward to meeting the wonderful people giving up their time to help these organisations serve the community and learning more about what each does.
Mayor Hely added “as a Council we’re focussed on doing more to encourage and support volunteering and I look forward to this work progressing in partnership with our Community Recovery Committee that is helping to ensure that we’re well placed to recover from COVID-19.
“Whether your thing is local sport, education, arts and crafts, supporting our older people, emergency management or something in-between I encourage you to explore the opportunities available on the Volunteering Australia website. You won’t regret it. And to the people already giving up their time in Stonnington: thank you."
