read moreThe City of Vincent’s Loftus Recreation Centre is set to be the home to the 2016 Australian University Games, which commences on Sunday (25th September) and runs until Friday 30th September.
The centre, operated by Belgravia Leisure and owned by City of Vincent, will host the six-day flagship event which includes more than 30 individual and team sports such as cycling, swimming, basketball and water polo. The event provides a friendly yet competitive environment for over 6,000 Australian university student-athletes, many of whom are of Olympic standard.
Marking six years since the Australian University Games were last held in the western state, Loftus Recreation Centre, with key partners including Tourism Western Australia, will welcome studentathletes from Western universities along with those from the East Coast, Central Australia and Tasmania.
Welcoming the hosting of Australia’s largest annual multisport event, Belgravia Leisure Chief Executive Nick Cox explains “we are thrilled to host such a large scale event which promotes sport to young adults, particularly off the back of such an exciting Olympics in Rio.
“Loftus Recreation Centre is an outstanding facility and we are proud it has been chosen as the venue for such a significant event on the national university sporting calendar.”
Australian University Sport Chief Executive Don Knapp added “(the) student experience can be greatly enhanced through participation in sporting activities while studying.
"Events such as the Australian University Games provide student-athletes with the opportunity to pursue a dual career education and sport pathway, in turn contributing to better retention and completion rates for today’s student-athletes enrolled in tertiary education.
“The Games activates broader participation at both elite and social levels across our 42 member universities. Participants will experience the highest quality intervarsity competition available in Australia at some of the best sporting facilities in the country.”
The Australian University Games began in 1993 and has since grown to become Australia’s largest annual multisport event.
