Dangerous surf conditions over Christmas for southern Queensland

December 24, 2011
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a Severe Weather Warning on 23rd December for Dangerous Surf conditions and Abnormally High Tides for coastal areas from Sandy Cape to Point Danger, including the popular Fraser, Sunshine and Gold Coasts.
The Bureau of Meteorology's Regional Director in Queensland, Jim Davidson, said that large ocean swells, generated by a combination of ex-tropical cyclone Fina and a ridge of high pressure, would affect the Queensland coast from Saturday (Christmas Eve).
Davidson stated "those making plans to head to the beach over the Christmas long weekend should check the Bureau's forecasts and warnings to ensure they have the very latest information.
"These large swells have the potential to create dangerous conditions for activities such as swimming, surfing and boating over the busy Christmas period, affecting the coast Fraser Island to Point Danger.
"Beach goers should wait for guidance from Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) and local councils on beach conditions and closures before entering the water."
The dangerous surf conditions are likely to continue through to Tuesday.
In the event of large swells resulting in dangerous surf conditions SLSQ recommends:
ï¾ Swim only between the red and yellow flags and during patrol hours - do not enter the water if a beach is closed or unpatrolled.
ï¾ Follow any direction issued by lifesavers or lifeguards.
ï¾ Obey any signage that has been displayed.
ï¾ Avoid entering the water until it is deemed safe to do so.
ï¾ Stay away from rock ledges and shelves.
ï¾ Avoid near shore boating, fishing or rock fishing.
The combination of high tides and large waves over the Christmas weekend could also lead to localised inundation of low lying coastal areas.
