Discovery Climbing Walls’ installations tap into sport’s popularity since Olympic debut
With sport climbing launched into the spotlight since its Olympic debut in 2020, the activity has boomed in popularity among Australian youth, being not only challenging physically but also providing a fun and exciting way for participants to challenge themselves mentally with problem-solving and puzzles.
Offering a wide range of climbing wall solutions, including bouldering walls, top-rope walls and lead climbing walls, as well as custom designs, Discovery Climbing Walls designs and manufactures climbing walls for use in commercial, educational and residential environments.
Among its recent projects, in 2020 it equipped the Parkes PCYC with a climbing wall, funded by $82,620 secured from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.
Another project, at the Cumnock Public School near Orange came as a result of the School wanting an engaging student activity for their playground upgrades. The result has been a free-standing traverse wall perfect for primary school-aged children with climbing holds even matching the School's logo.
With Discovery Climbing also specialising in designing and building therapy climbing walls, a collaboration with local community artists who create beautiful murals is amazing resulted in children at Therapy Care in Brisbane getting to climb on a work of art.
With this project, the colours and design create a spectacular experience for the children to feel engaged to achieve their best.
Commenting on the benefits of the activity, Matt McComb, Discovery Climbing’s Chief Climbing Director, explains “there are many ways to rock climb, from rope climbing to bouldering. Automatic belays are perfect in places where there aren’t enough teachers or qualified students to belay. Instead of sticking to bouldering, automatic belays allow one to climb without a partner, getting kids off the ground and engaging healthy risk-taking behaviour in a safe environment.
“Additionally, sport climbing is a rare sport in that it is conducive to both healthy competition and a friendly spirit. Instead of competing against others, one competes against oneself - there are no losers in rock climbing.
“This makes it the perfect sport for a school environment, where competition can make some unmotivated and others encouraged. Rock climbing is an easy sport to tailor to each individual’s needs and preferences.”
Discovery Climbing specialise in designing and building climbing and bouldering walls with a crew able to create any style to suit all budgets and visions.
