Dubbo Regional Council opens new Wellington Aquatic Leisure Centre

Dubbo Regional Council opens new Wellington Aquatic Leisure Centre
December 12, 2019

The recent opening of the $8.35 million Wellington Aquatic Leisure Centre saw hundreds of people join home-town Paralympian swimmer Ben Austin in taking to the water new pool.

Dubbo Region Council Mayor Ben Shields and Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders unveiled a plaque at last month's opening before Austin cut the ribbon and led local families into the pool to begin a day of community celebrations.

The new completely redeveloped facility offers an eight-lane pool with disabled access, heated exercise and learn-to-swim pool and splash pad.

Building work on the project was undertaken by Bathurst-based Hines Constructions with Hydrocare Pools undertaking the filtration and water treatment work.

Hydrocare fitted sand filtration units for the 50 metre and learn-to-swim pools with, Prominent water treatment while for the aquatic play area the Western Sydney business installed a hydrocyclone cartridge system, which separates solids before filtration to reduce time spent on cartridge cleaning.

The pools also use ultraviloet sterilisation for disinfecting bacteria in accordance with NSW Department of Health guidelines

Commenting on the project, Hydrocare Director Robert Savell stated "the hydrocyclone cartridge system we have installed is ideal for splash pads and hydrotherapy pool while ultraviolet purification is the most effective method for disinfecting bacteria from water."

With Wellington being one of the many communities in regional NSW experiencing drought, backwash water from the pool is being used to irrigate parks in the town.

Dubbo Regional Council has prioritised water for the new pool during the current drought, with Mayor Shields recently stating “I’d like to remind people of how important spaces such as this are for our wellbeing. Recreational spaces have the ability to provide social inclusion, refuge during times of heat, along with fantastic sporting opportunities."

The new facility is part of Dubbo Regional Council’s commitment to build and grow the region with a strong emphasis on capital works projects that will provide services to support development and expansion of business and the community. The Council received a NSW Government Stronger Communities Community Grants for the Wellington project.

With the pool delivered in time for the peak season and under budget, entry costs just $2 until Australia Day.

Mayor Shields said the goodwill gesture was a way of thanking Wellington residents for their patience over the past 18 months and recognised locals had been without a pool throughout last summer.
