Eagle Stadium to spread its wings in Wyndham

Eagle Stadium to spread its wings in Wyndham
May 28, 2015

With Stage 1 of Wyndham City Council's redevelopment of Eagle Stadium completed, the newly transformed venue will be hosting a community day where residents can come along and experience all this new facility has to offer.

Doors to the facility, formerly known as Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre, opened yesterday (27th May) with the venue becoming fully operational under the management of Western Leisure Services (WLS) while Wyndham City’s Community Open Day, where the Council will celebrate the completion of Stage 1, will be held on Sunday 14th June.

Wyndham Mayor and Portfolio holder for Sport and Recreation, Councillor Peter Maynard is delighted that the much anticipated wait is nearly over and is looking forward to celebrating this significant milestone with the Wyndham community.

Mayor Maynard explained “the community open day gives Wyndham residents the opportunity to come along and experience all the new facility has to offer and participate in the many activities we have planned to celebrate the day.

“At Wyndham City’s Community Open Day we will have players from Melbourne United and Netball Victoria, a FREE Big V match, a half court shoot-out competition and family friendly entertainment.”

"Wyndham City has invested in the redevelopment of this facility as the former Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre had reached capacity.”

The $47 million redevelopment of Eagle Stadium was funded by Wyndham City together with $650,000 from the Victorian Government and $9 million from the Federal Government - funding secured with strong support by a community campaign launched in February 2013.

As part of the completion of Stage 1, Eagle Stadium now includes:

• Eight new indoor multi sports courts
• Show court with seating for up to 500 spectators (with additional seating to be added as part of Stage 2)
• Four external netball courts
• Public amenities
• Café area with internal and external dining areas
• Temporary crèche facilities for the duration of Stage 2 works
• Car parking facilities and landscaping.

Stage 2 works will now begin and will include:

• Refurbishment of existing three courts
• Fully encapsulated table tennis area for nine tables (with the flexibility to convert to court space)
• Expansion of show court to accommodate an additional 1,000 spectators (seating 1,500 in total)
• A state-of-the-art fitness club
• Expansion of crèche and administration areas
• Function and meeting rooms.

The overall project is due for completion in mid-2016.

Wyndham City Council’s biggest ever capital works project, the AquaPulse and the Encore Events Centre, is set to open of Saturday 27th June.
