The refurbishment of the 40-year-old Waterworld has seen the facility’s dive pool, 50 metre pool and 25 metre pool closed.
Much of the investment will go into back-of-house areas. Contractors will be installing new pumps and filters for the 25 metre and 50 metre pool, as well as a significant amount of new piping to transfer water from the plant room to the pools, and a fire systems upgrade.
This work will include faster filters that can shave 12 or more hours off the turnaround time in case of ‘code brown’ or other contamination of the water.
In the public areas, customers will see new non-slip flooring around the pools; a new raised concourse around the 50 metre pool, meaning it will be slightly deeper than before; installation of a new moveable bulkhead and starting blocks in the 50 metre pool and new LED lighting.
New sound-absorbing baffles on the ceiling will soak up some of the noise from swimmers, and a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system will cut through the current humidity.
The main pool hall is off-limits to customers during the refurbishment and also hidden from view.
To compensate for the closure of the three pools in the main pool hall, the Lido (outdoor) pool will open for an extended season and will also be heated. Waterworld’s hydroslides, splashpad, sauna and steam room will all be open as usual. The facility’s gym will continue to operate, and a new schedule for use of the hydrotherapy pool has been released.
Hamilton Pools management is urging customers to exercise patience, courtesy and understanding during the closure due to its length and the pressure on the reduced pool space.
