read moreQueensland Premier Anna Bligh has announced that the transformation of Brisbane's RNA Showgrounds is a step closer after the Urban Land Development Authority (ULDA) board gave their in principle support to the $3 billion development.
The ULDA's support was granted after the masterplan for the 15 year project was signed off last week.
The project is expected to support up to 2000 construction jobs a year for the next 15 years.
Premier Bligh stated that "this development will reshape this 132-year old site and it will transform this area of inner Brisbane.
"The Ekka Showgrounds have played an important part in our State's history and this development will help secure the future of the RNA.
"We recently released the SEQ Regional plan which placed an emphasis on infill development.
"This development which will include, commercial, retail and residential as well as parks, walkways and bikeways and is exactly the type of project that the plan envisages."
The Premier said Cabinet viewed a presentation from the RNA about their $3 billion redevelopment including a 3D flythrough.
"That showed very clearly the potential of this project and the benefits that it can offer to this part of Brisbane."
The 15 year project will redevelop the 22 hectare Ekka site and construction is expected to commence early in the New Year.
Premier Bligh added "the development is one of the largest infill developments in Brisbane's history and a full development assessment will now be undertaken by the ULDA."
Construction is due to start after in 2010 when the Industrial Pavilion will be refurbished to include an underground car park, a flat floor exhibition level, new administration and meeting facilities, with provisions for a future hotel.
