read moreAdelaide’s The Grange golf course will host the first LIV Golf tournament in Australia as part of the breakaway league’s 14-stop global tournament.
With the Adelaide event to be backed by the South Australian Government, the Saudi Arabian-backed tournament will be held from 21st to 23rd April.
In a statement on the event, Australian golfing great Greg Norman, Chief Executive and Commissioner of LIV Golf, advised there was "massive potential" for Australia to play a role in the new league, which also features major winners Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia.
With the US PGA Tour not playing top-tier tournaments in Australia, with big names only lured by the Presidents Cup, which was last contested in Melbourne in 2019, Norman added “passion for sport is at the core of Australian culture, and LIV Golf is proud to bring its global league to a country deserving of the world's top competition.
“This is an opportunity to grow the game with generations of Australians while connecting them with star players like Cameron Smith who are building a new platform for golf around the globe.
“There is massive potential for Australia to play a bigger role in this great sport, and I couldn’t be more excited to showcase Adelaide for our league’s debut year.”
Norman said the LIV Golf tournament will be a massive boost for golf in Australia which has never had a consistent run of major golfing championships before, adding “yes, the Presidents Cup has been here, the World Cup has been here, but for consistency year in and year out, what LIV can do through the South Australian government, through coming down here with a multi-year commitment that we‘ve given to Australia and going into the future is something that’s important, no different than what it is in any other country, any other region around the world.”
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas is supporting behind the tournament, saying it will provide an important economic boost to the state.
Premier Malinauskas stated “this is an unparalleled opportunity for our state and our country in a way that is utterly appropriate and one that we’ve got an obligation to pursue.”
