read moreLive music in northern Adelaide is being backed by $100,000 from the South Australian Government for the City of Playford’s successful Northern Sound System.
As part of the Northern Economic Plan, young musicians based in northern Adelaide can now apply for a share of $30,000 in grants to help them with new recordings, video production, live performances, and other projects.
$70,000 will be used to provide extra resources to support local artists, as well as increasing the frequency of live music events organised by the Northern Sound System. Each live music event creates at least eight jobs for local young people, and provides artists with a professional performance venue to showcase their talent.
Opened in 2007, the Northern Sound System is a purpose built, professional-standard recording and performance facility where young people in Adelaide’s north can create, perform, and record music.
The Northern Economic Plan was developed by the State Government in partnership with the Playford, Salisbury, and Port Adelaide Enfield Councils, industries, businesses, and the community to respond to the challenges likely to be faced by northern Adelaide after next year’s General Motors Holden closure.
Commenting on the funding, South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill stated “last year Adelaide was named a UNESCO City of Music in recognition of our commitment to live music in all its forms and it is great to see the role this growing industry can play in nurturing the talent of our young people and creating jobs in the northern suburbs.”
Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty added “northern Adelaide has a rich musical heritage, and the grants program will help even more young artists to move forward with their dream of creating music. Increasing the number of live music events at the Northern Sound System will give more local artists the opportunity to improve their confidence performing in front of a crowd, in a professional setting.”
South Sudanese rapper Kuol Kuol (KK The Rapper) a regular in the Northern Sound System studio, concluded “I put hard work and effort into my music, and as an artist I’m always looking to push my limits and deliver excellent material to my fans.
“I seem to face some limitations, so I am looking forward to applying for a grant to help push my production to the next level.”
The South Australian Government funding is part of our $24 million investment in economic development and job creation initiatives through the Northern Economic Plan.
