read moreThe Western Australian Government is committing a further $5.75 million in funding for Albany's Centennial Park in its 2016/17 budget.
The funding, through the Royalties for Regions program, bring total Government investment in precinct to $16.75 million, will enable the City of Albany to complete the $13.58 million redevelopment of the Eastern Precinct of the Centennial Park Sporting Complex.
This includes the construction of the new Australian rules football ground with a new playing surface, match standard floodlighting, clubrooms with function facilities, meeting rooms and elevated viewing areas.
Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the redevelopment of Centennial Park would transform the sporting and recreation landscape in the City of Albany, stating “the redevelopment will provide quality playing fields for participants while also providing off-field amenities for players, supporters, administrators and the general public.”
The Western Australian Government previously contributed $8 million to the Centennial Park project, which was part of a September 2008 election commitment. The latest contribution brings the Government's investment in the $27.1 million redevelopment to $16.75 million.
That funding went towards a three court extension to the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre (completed) development of a new playing field in the central precinct (completed), the upgrade of Railways Oval (completed) and new western precinct playing fields and lighting (underway).
Since 2008, through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, the Western Australian Government has also invested about $145 million in sport and recreation facilities across the State in projects totalling about $909 million
Infrastructure projects have included Perth Stadium, State Netball Centre, WAIS High Performance Service Centre, Barbagallo Raceway and nib Stadium.
