Geelong United looks to thrive in Victoria’s second largest market

Geelong United looks to thrive in Victoria’s second largest market
September 16, 2024

Set to play its first game in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) at the Geelong Arena as of 30th October, the relocated Geelong United (formerly the Melbourne Boomers) are looking to make the most of opportunities to grow women's sport in Victoria's second largest market.

Geelong United Basketball (GUB) and a consortium of investors, including Geoff Lord's Belgravia Group, acquired the WNBL’s oldest club’s license in May.

Speaking after the award of the licence, GUB Chief Executive Mark Neeld advised that he is thrilled for the opportunity to bring elite female athletes in the Geelong region, stating "the profile of women’s sport is on a dramatic rise, and locally we’ve seen so many of these women doing great things, particularly in basketball with the NBL1. We of course see the growth in basketball firsthand and want to reward our hard-working female athletes with another amazing opportunity to play sport at the highest level right here in their own backyard.”

In advance of the first tip-off, the club has announced high-performance fastening solutions company INFASTECH as its Naming Rights Partner for its inaugural WNBL season.

Beginning as the Bulleen Boomers in 1984, the team underwent a name change in 2013 to Melbourne Boomers.

GUB was established in 2019 as a joint partnership of Basketball Geelong and Corio Bay Basketball Association and also manages the Geelong United NBL1 program (formerly the Geelong Supercats) in the NBL1 South and enters teams in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) and the Big V youth divisions.
