read moreCoinciding with the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria’s 175th anniversary, the Global Botanic Gardens Congress has opened in Melbourne.
With the theme Influence and Action: Botanic Gardens as Agents of Change, the 7th edition of Botanic Gardens Conservation International's Congress (7GBGC) will explore the role of botanic gardens in combatting biodiversity loss across the globe.
Being held from Sunday 25th to Thursday 29th September at the Royal Botanic Garden and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), the Congress's Sunday and Monday program features a range of optional tours to explore the city and regional areas with their contrasting spectacular gardens, in addition to a dedicated Engagement and Education Day being held today at the Botanic Gardens.
From Tuesday to Thursday over 400 participants from across the world, will enjoy presentations from inspiring speakers, fascinating workshops, panel discussions, symposia and poster presentations.
Being held in Australia, the Congress is one of a series of upcoming major international business events arriving at MCEC within the next year including the Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2023 and the Rotary International Convention.
Expected to deliver an economic impact of $3.2 million, the Congress was secured by Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) with the help of Club Melbourne’s David Cantrill, Chief Botanist at the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Advising that he is pleased to see more international events return to the venue, MCEC Chief Executive Peter King stated "with our own magnificent Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, it’s easy to see why the event has come to our unique city.
“Melbourne is an ideal location for international business events and the best place to bring the world’s leading thinkers together.”
The Congress is expected to see the launch of Climate Assessment Tool for botanic gardens, along with a Landscape Succession Toolkit to provide a framework for botanic gardens to develop their own climate strategy.
