Gold Coast’s major sporting venues welcomed over two million visitors this financial year
May 29, 2023

Gold Coast Major Sporting Venues have marked major milestone in 2023, welcoming over two million visitors already this financial year.

Welcoming the significant increase from previous years, City of Gold Coast, Mayor Tom Tate stated “this milestone highlights the ever-increasing popularity of our Major Sporting Venues and the integral role the Gold Coast will play in the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Our world-class sporting venues are valuable community assets that will continue to benefit our city’s growing sports and entertainment sectors for generations to come.”

Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Stadium and Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium have seen a 154% increase in visitation since they were handed over to the council after the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The numbers continue to grow year on year with a 17% increase in visitors expected by the end of the 2023 financial year compared to the same period last year.

In the 2019/20 financial year all four venues received 792,588 visitors, compared to 1.281 million in 2020/21 and 1.716 million in 2021/22.

The economic benefit of these four venues in a 12-month period is expected to be approximately $213 million at the end of the 2022/23 financial year.

Each venue is multipurpose with its own unique benefits collectively hosting 115 key state and national and international events in a 12-month period.

Major Sporting Venues currently employs 122 staff members and their multipurpose use allows them to host a range of sports for community and school clubs and recreational groups. Their versatility also allows them to also host meetings, training days and conferences.

Mayor Tate added “the future of Major Sporting Venues is looking very promising, with a masterplan being reviewed to incorporate exciting initiatives leading up to 2032.”
