read more30 projects across Western Australia have been awarded small grants funding through the Western Australian Government's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
Offered twice a year through the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation, the small grants are designed for grassroots sport, recreation clubs, and councils that need financial assistance to complete a project which might otherwise be out of reach.
Explaining the grants, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the small grants scheme, which was for projects under $150,000, could make a big difference to a community's participation in and enjoyment of sport and recreational activities.
Minister Waldron stated "many of these clubs need a helping hand for projects which might not otherwise be financially viable.
"As a life-long club member, I know how much help a grant like this can be to the health of a club and its ability to keep and attract members.
"Since 2008, the Government has invested $6,085,546 through CSRFF small grants into 269 projects across the State.
"This has helped to build 15 new cricket pitches, improve 14 aquatic centres and provide upgrades to 20 tennis clubs and 29 netball clubs. Upgrades have included new courts, lighting upgrades and new storage areas. Funds have also gone towards replacing bowling greens and upgrading BMX tracks."
Grant recipients from this year's round include:
• Forza Dragon Boat Club: $10,141 for construction of a boat storage shed
• City of Stirling: $16,899 for installation of floodlighting at Grenville Reserve
• City of Subiaco: $50,000 for upgrade of the Nicholson Road skate park
• Shire of Kalamunda: $18,333 for a master plan for Ray Owen Reserve
• Broome Pistol Club: $63,553 for refurbishment of a pistol range
• Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup: $10,089 for new cricket wickets at Egan Park
Of the 30 successful projects, 16 are in regional Western Australia and 14 are in the Perth metropolitan area.
The second 2013/14 CSRFF Small Grants round opens on Monday 1st July and closes on 30th August.
