Great Barrier Reef Masters Games benefits North Queensland

More than $2 million was generated for the local economy by this year’s Great Barrier Reef Masters Games - the biennial four-day sporting festival for masters-aged athletes.
Held in Cairns in May, more than 1500 participants competed in 19 sports at the 2017 Games, with a further 500 guests involved as officials, supporters and sponsors.
Coordinated by Cairns Regional Council, the event attracted 130 international competitors, including 81 from Papua New Guinea, and 347 participants from interstate.
The majority of competitors were aged between 40 and 54 years, with nine athletes aged over 80. Several new sports were introduced in 2017, including archery, cycling, ten pin bowling and swimming.
It is estimated that the Games produced a total 4759 visitor nights and a direct economic benefit of about $1.25 million.
The next event will be staged from 23rd to 26th May 2019.
