Gymnastics Australia seeks clarity on Brisbane 2032 venue

Gymnastics Australia seeks clarity on Brisbane 2032 venue
March 31, 2025

Following the Brisbane 2032 facilities announcement earlier this week, Gymnastics Australia is seeking urgent clarity and support from the Queensland Government on the competition venue and legacy infrastructure for gymnastics, which received no mention in the 2032 Delivery Plan.

Gymnastics Australia together with Gymnastics Queensland is actively seeking clarity on gymnastics’ inclusion in the proposed build of the Chandler Indoor Sports Centre - the preferred option for creating a lasting home for gymnastics in Queensland.

Gymnastics Australia notes “with its global appeal and status as one of the most-watched Olympic sports it is astonishing that gymnastics has been completely overlooked in the announcement made by the Queensland Premier earlier this week.”

Gymnastics Australia Chief Executive Alistair Edgar advised “a home Olympic Games is a once in a generation opportunity that inspires our Australian gymnasts who dream of performing in front of a home crowd.

“The Queensland Government needs to show its support for gymnastics and make a commitment to providing much-needed legacy infrastructure for the community.”

Gymnastics is recognised as a fundamental movement activity and foundational sport. More than 800,000 Australians actively engage in gymnastics every year. In Queensland alone, membership numbers are expected to nearly double to over 100,000 by 2032.

Including gymnastics in the development of the Chandler facility is an opportunity to create a world-class venue that supports grassroots participation, high performance pathways, and community engagement.

Gymnastics Australia calls on the Queensland Government to confirm whether the proposed development of the Chandler Indoor Sports Centre will proceed and include gymnastics or outline an alternative legacy facility and emphasises “this commitment is essential to allow our sport and community to plan effectively and ensure that Brisbane 2032 delivers lasting value for gymnastics.”

Gymnastics Australia remains committed to working in partnership with the Queensland and Federal governments, the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee, Australian Olympic Committee and Federation of International Gymnastics, to achieve a facility outcome that supports both the delivery of the Games and caters for long-term growth of gymnastics within the Oceania region.
