High winds have caused extensive damage to the roof of the western grandstand at Wollongong's WIN Stadium.

The recently installed roof buckled under gale-force winds yesterday (Tuesday 20th September) raising fears it could collapse. Later severe weather did not eventuate with the Bureau of Meteorology cancelling weather warnings.

The buckling caused emergency services to rush to the stadium with engineers on site deeming the situation a critical incident.

Local newspaper the Illawarra Mercury quoted witnesses as saying a large structural beam in the roof appeared to have snapped and reported that The Steelers Club had been evacuated as a precaution and local streets closed.

WIN Stadium's 6,000 seat Western Grandstand, the oldest in the stadium, was recently refurbished at a cost of $28.9 million.
