Manukau City Council has opened a new skatepark at its Barry Curtis Park.
One of New Zealandâs most ambitious, the skatepark was designed by Isthmus Group who worked with a technical advisory group including skate advocate Owen Williams, Mark Finlay from Cheapskates Junction and Boardertownâs Tim Guy.
In a New Zealand first, the team developed ideas from local skateboarders sent in via social networking site Facebook. These were reviewed by experienced skatepark builders from New Zealand and Australia.
The park features a large modern plaza area, authentic classic pool, innovative skateable materials and structures, entryways and paths, and viewing and socialising space. It has been designed to host international events and the bowl will challenge local skaters for years to come.
Barry Curtis Park is at the heart of the Flat Bush new town development and covers a total land area of 94 hectares. The park is closely linked with Flat Bush's town centre, with the western part of the town centre surrounded by the park.
